If you are looking for a great city to visit for your next trip to Australia then look no further than the capital of Western Australia, Perth. In this isolated city on the west coast you will find natural splendor, cool art and the birthplace of none other than rock giant and Perth’s favorite son, Bon Scott.
There is so much to see in Perth and as such, renting a car from Budget is probably the best way to see the best of this city, such is its isolation just beyond the Darling Scarp mountains with no city in sight for over 1,000 miles, you will be flying both in and out of the city and although transport is great, the flexibility of having your own car is highly recommended.
If you like the sound of a trip to Perth then here are the best things to do whilst in the City of Light.
Relax in the Vast King’s Park
There is a very laid back style of living in Perth, perhaps owing to its isolation and it only makes sense to live as the local do when you visit. To that end, you should visit King’s Park for an afternoon of relaxation. This vast, 400- hectare park is the largest inner-city park in the southern hemisphere and here you will find outstanding views across the Perth skyline and the Swan River. A scared place to Aborigines, this park also offers historical tours where you can learn about their culture.
Perth offers some incredible suburban beaches and my favorite is Cottesloe, around a 15 minute drive from the city center. The water on this beach is famed for its clarity and locals will attest to this being the single best place to watch the sunsetting over the glistening Indian Ocean. The town nearby the beach is full of laid back cafes and beach-front bars where you can watch the sunset in style.
Eat at The Greenhouse
Perth is fast catching up with Melbourne as a food capital and no doubt the hottest restaurant in town right now is The Greenhouse. The idea of the restaurant is about sustainability and this can be seen from the building design with fresh growing plants on it to the cuisine indoors which uses local produce. I would recommend trying one of their incredible wood-fired pizzas, delicious!
Commonly known as Freo by the locals, Freemantle gives tourist a glimpse in to somewhat more traditional Australian ways of living with World Heritage buildings and a 19th Century streetscape. Here you will find bustling markets, outstanding seafood restaurants and plenty of action on the water. This town is packed with character and is set around a 30 minute drive from the city centre, giving you no reason at all not to visit this beautiful little town.
Perth will give you a great vacation and if the sunsets, the food, the sights and the laid back atmosphere weren’t enough for you then perhaps the outstanding scenery, the river cruises and the friendly locals will be, whatever it is that you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in Perth.
